“Acting Absurd in the Name of Good”

Five o’clock, Christmas Eve, I went out to see the hauntingly beautiful movie, "Memoirs of a Geisha." This, as you’ll see, turned out to be the exact best thing to do given the disconcerting feelings I was having throughout the day…

I had woken up in the morning with the strong urge to send out an email to everyone on my subscriber list. I wanted to announce a surprise 30 minute teleseminar that evening which would be more like a brief tele-communion.

As Christmas Eve approached, I just had the feeling how wonderful it would be sharing the joys of this triple arrival of Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa with my readers.

Even more than that though, was the feeling deep in my solar plexus that some people on my list of subscribers from more than 55 countries might be feeling quite lonely on Christmas Eve.

How wonderful it would be to share just a few minutes together with everyone who had no one with whom to spend the evening.

The thousands of letters from readers sharing their heart, loves, joys and sorrows with me as related to the Wealthy Soul Newsletters, The 30 Gifts Presentations, and The Wealthy Soul Book Series, has been the single greatest reward for the last 12 years of tremendous efforts leading up to today. And it is a reward that completely fills my soul.

I customarily read and respond to every single email that is sent to me.

However, last Saturday there were approximately 300 emails I had not been able to yet respond to, many of which had been lying in my inbox for 2-3 weeks, and more arriving by the minute.

          Here was the problem:

I had not had a single day off for the last 4 months, usually spending most of my weekends composing personal replies to each of the week’s avalanche of emails.

But I suddenly just couldn’t write another word. I was exhausted.

My 14 hour days, 7 days a week since September preparing for the busiest time of year for readers obtaining my books finally caught up with me.

Nevertheless, I had a solution. It came in the form of the timely arrival of an 8-week-long course I recently started taking on how to give teleseminars.

Teleseminars will actually provide the opportunity for much higher intimacy with subscribers without the necessity of me always answering one email at a time.

Readers will be able to share their stories and ask me questions directly, as well as hear my responses and the responses to the questions of others, who may have similar questions.

And so there I was at three o’clock just before Christmas Eve hurrying to prepare the topic for this first teleseminar/telecommunion . . . setting up the ‘bridge line’ . .. getting the recording equipment working . . . and trying to get a last minute email out to those who might happen to be online instead of with family to let them know of this surprise Christmas Eve tryst with them . . .

. . . when I suddenly realized there was something very funny about what I was doing.

In the name of saving time and creating more of a life for myself while at the same time staying in closer contact with readers . . . wasn’t I in fact creating more of the Exact Same Problem?!

Wasn’t I, in fact, taking up my entire day getting the technical details of this first teleseminar worked out, pressing time, creating stress . . . all in the name of doing good and "saving time?!"

          (Sound familiar?)

So, at that moment of realizing the absurdity of my behavior, I threw my hands up in the air, turned off my laptop, and with a smile, headed out to the movies for the first time since summer.

Next week I’ll share with you the exquisite lessons one particular scene of "Memoirs of a Geisha" had for me relative to the entire subject matter.

With the New Year almost here, ask yourself:

       *  How much extra do I try to fit into a day?

       *  How unnecessarily stressed do I make myself?

       *  How much am I running myself ragged in the name of
          being "a good provider" . . . "a loving mother" .
          . . "a caring person"?

       *  Wouldn’t my loved ones be better off with a little
          more relaxed and present me rather than a me that
          earns a little more money or provides a few more
          things?

And lastly:

       *  Am I really "doing good?" . . . or am I really
          doing something absurd in the supposed "name of
          doing good?"
