There were only memories of the similarities in her life to that of an African American woman slave of times past in American history, and how they were different. Where as she was primed to be used (training in the arts, makeup, etc.) we were just used at will for sexual favors. If you were a mulatto, or octoroon, you were given many of the same “perks” as the geisha (a small home, monies, etc.) It was sad to see how so many things have not changed; women of other than the dominant culture still do not have the respect they deserve.
The movie was breathtakingly beautiful. The beauty acted as a cover for the sorrow of the lives of these very young girls who were in truth part of the child slavery problem that still exists today. Whether it is poor families selling their young daughters to be hostesses in the Philippines, a Saudi Harem or any of the other places in the world were the poor sell their children to satisfy the hungers of the wealthy.
I was touched by so many moments. There was the part when she was at the Barons home and under the Cherry tree with the Chairman and she talked of the beauty and twirled around catching the leaves in her hands. They stated that joy was flitting as was sorrow and one should enjoy each moment when it came, and that you should appreciate the beauty and savor those moment to keep you warm in the “cold times”. That reminded me of the importance of living in the moment and releasing the past.
The ending where she thought Nobu was the one she was meeting and it turned out to be the chairman. He declared his love and stated he had waited so long to declare his love for her out of honor and loyalty to a true friend. So many lessons in that final moment for me I am not sure I can capture them in this one moment. There was a time when a mans hand shake was enough to seal a deal; his word was his bond and to be trusted. Loyalty was something that was expected and treasured. How often to we see that today! How many marriages last more than 10 years? It taught me that with patience and purity of heart our dreams can become reality even if the reality is not exactly how we pictured it. And it showed how we value beauty so much so that it was a commodity that could be bought and sold.
Is it truly different today when wealthy man i.e. a Donald Trump can buy women when he tires of the old one, turn one in for another trophy wife. The geisha was a form of prostitution, even if very little actual sex took place. They were beautiful and heart-breaking, the whole movie was a mixed metaphor, beauty and the ugliness of life and it depended on what you chose to focus on.
I found there to be many beautiful moments and many sad ones I walked out with mixed emotions, tears running down my cheeks, happy for the Hollywood ending where our heroine was finally with the man of her heart even if only part-time.
I saw the movie and it was absolutely beautiful! It ended exactly the way I wanted it to. There were many memorable moments that I could elaborate on. But I think the most memorable one for me was the faith that she had. The way she held out for her true love. When Ken Watanabe planted the seed inside of her as a child, by showing her attention and giving her hope. She held on to that, and despite her adversitities and circumstances in her life, SHE not having anything took what HE gave her (money)and she stepped out in faith and gave it as an offering. That was the most beautiful moment, and the movie ending that way was the best! I loved the movie and it spoke volumes to my spirit. Amazing…
The most memorable moment for me was when she was at the Baron’s home and he led her from the garden into his home. At the end of the scene she was lying on the floor exposed and alone. This scene ripped my emotions from my body, mind and soul! Trickery, dishonor, lost hopes and dreams, innocence, beauty, a whirlwind of feelings!
I am sorry to say the Geisha movie was quite disappointing. Having read the book I saw lovely photographs of beautiful scenes. A premise that was altered to accomodate the mass public and a story I have seen told better in other films. I am always grateful to be able to see many films throughout the year and have many memories of such that have altered my life considerably. This was not one of them. But in this world we need to listen better and be tolerant of others thoughts and beliefs even when they might not be our own. Thanks for listening, Caren
I love Spielberg . . . what a beautiful movie. The acting was excellent. The most memorable moment for me was the bridge scene when she was a little girl and the Chairman bought her the ice cone. She made a decision in that moment to continue to pursue being a geisha — and be with the Chairman. It was fun finding out at the end that that’s what the Chairman decided in that moment also. One never knows when that seed is planted or that conscious/unconscious decision is made, just how long it will take to manifest. Very intriguing.

First of all I’d like to THANK-YOU a ton for the work on the newsletter. I haven’t read the books, but I plan on ordering them in January. The newsletters always are a lift for me and friends I know!
I’d like to share a moment I had a few weeks ago:
So there I was — sitting under the twilight of the early morning stars, sipping a steaming cuppa coffee, and talking to God about how my life had taken a rather drole turn this Christmas season. Divorce papers from my husband the day after Thanksgiving hadn’t done much to lift my spirits.
Now Christmas has to be my favorite holiday ever. It’s the time for celebrating Christ’s birth, time for family – friends – sharing – caring – giving and most of all for love. Christmas, and everything it stands for, is something that everyone should hold in their hearts all year long.
So there I was sipping that coffee and feeling a bit blue about the way things were going when out of nowhere I saw a dark shape, and when it came into focus in the stillness of the brisk wintery morning the brown eyes of a doe caught mine. After a quick gaze she went back to flicking the snow off the top of the grass and nibbling a bite or two before moving on.
Mama’s antics brought a smile to my face and I was thanking God for his gift of letting me know that he is always there, when a minature version of mama came prancing out of the same still nowhere to my lil version of somewhere.
One deer frisking around the back-yard in the twinkle of a million city lights .. and a million Christmas lights .. is a wonder, but two? Well upon seeing those two I chuckled, took a deep breath and sucked in all that is right in life and breathed out that is wrong in life. Heading back inside I realized that God had opened the door with a smile on new day.
I didn’t like the movie because it didn’t have any resolution. The Geisha that the story was about never seemed to grow as a person. She only learned tools of manipulation. Even when she finally got with the ‘man of her dreams’ I was left with a sense of tragedy, as she was still destined to live at the whim of circumtances or some other person.
The pattern of her life seemed to be: Get what you want by learning to manipulate others, especially men, by appealing to their egos and prurient natures. To me the movie was a tragedy in that she never found freedom or true happiness, meaning and fulfillment, she never found or learned how to truly use her personal power.
Her life was typical of the mindset of people who believe they are victims of circumstances, antithetical to the following:
“We create our own heaven or hell. Your thoughts can imprison you or set you free. Complications, conditions or people do not upset you, but the way you think about them causes your upset. Freedom is not possible until we discipline and retrain our minds.” — p. 124 of Choose To Live Peacefully by Susan Smith Jones, Ph.D.

Memoirs of a Geisha confirms that money dictates ones life. Money used for good or evil. If you are poor such as the character and her family was, you suffered by the hands of those that had money, therefore, having power over you. Even after she earned enough money to pay for her debts she did not know how to use her freedom. She was trained in the arts of being a Geisha and satisfying those who dictated what she had to do. Yet, at the same time, she knew exactly what she wanted and stayed true to her heart. I liked the fact that her heart was pure. Despite the way she was mistreated as a young girl, she grew up to be gracious and was not bitter. Only when she decided to deceive Nobu her plans backfired. She lost all hope to be with The Chairman, the man of her dreams. I was relieved and happy that this movie had a happy ending. Therefore, this movie gives one the hope of dreams, the will to have integrity at all times, and the power to overcome adversity and never to lose hope.
The lessons in this story remind me of the lessons in my favorite movie of all time, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
The Movie was great! The woman portrayed in Memoirs of a Geisha was so beautiful to me, because she was always true, to herself, to others, and to Love. From the beginning, Loving her sister and searching for her at all costs, to her faithfulness to the evil geisha, to rising above and giving her wealth in exchange for a prayer, and right through to her great moment, not of fame and fourtune, but that of Love. How wonderful a thought, that if We are True to ourselves, others, and Love, that all will work out for Us in the end – it is a Guarantee!

This movie could be viewed from different angles. If you see the sadness in the life of a geisha let it inspire you to help make changes for women in other countries who are still being tortured and oppressed. The most important lesson to me was that a single act of kindness can profoundly change a life by giving it hope and purpose. How many lives can I impact today…….
I read the book before seeing the movie. The story changed but the bottom line message was one that so disturbes me.
We still live in a world in which a woman’s power and ability to survive is all through her relationship with a man.
This is disheartening at best. Although not every woman is dependent on a man, even in our “land of the free”,the U.S.A., a woman who doesn’t marry is seen as someone who has something wrong with her.
In addition, I liked that she unites finally with the chairman but the story line in the book reveals that she is a mistress and bears a son to the chairman while he has a wife and another family. It was noble of Sayuri/Chiyo to pursue heart felt kindness in a man, it was also pathetic for that goal to end up in a relationship without the respect and honor such loyalty deserves.
I took some time out this weekend to see Memoirs of a Geisha.
Besides some breath taking scenery and great acting, I was moved by
this movie, yes it’s not the kind of life that most people here in the western
world can understand, and one I’d hope we can change for all the oppressed.
It’s does however show, that no matter what our station in life, we have dreams
and desires, something to look forward to . In the end it’s not the destination, but the
journey, that’s what a lifetime is. Dreams are what fuels our faith, it’s faith that give
us the strength to move forward.
I was taking by how small acts of kindness can transform a person’s life. We may
not know how profound a single kind word can be in someone else’s life, but God
does.
It’s strange to say, given by story behind this movie. The feeling I came away with was
one of unconditional love.

I have once encountered a wealthy soul,who helped me alot when i dint have self confidence and didnt believe in myself,he believed in me and encouraged me alot.
I read parts of the Geisha book in the bookstore in past when it first came out. As of yet, I have not seen the movie, due to traveling over holidays. I plan to see it sometime soon, especially after Michael piqued my interest. After reading this blog and the comments, I feel like this movie will generate the same type of feelings I have about the book and movie, Pay It Forward. That book and movie was profoundly sad in the ending, but profoundly moving and meaningful in it’s message.
A year or two ago, I was at the public library reading and doing research. I noticed a young African American woman standing outside (it was cold) as if she was waiting for someone. I went in and an hour or two later when I came back to my car, I saw she was still there. I spoke to her, asking her what she was doing. She said she was waiting for a ride. Her car had broken down and someone was to pick her up, but they did not. No more buses were going her way at night. She was stranded. I asked where she lived, then I offered to drive her home. First she declined, saying she had to go deliver an income tax report to an elderly woman in her church, who lived in another part of town, first. I again offered to take her there. She was very reluctant to accept, feeling she was imposing on me, a stranger. I tried to reassure her it was OK. So she accepted, with reluctance. We chatted a bit on the ride, and She expressed amazement that I would offer her a ride. The part of town she was going to was one I never drove in at night. She knew that without me saying anything. I offered to wait in my car for her to deliver the tax stuff to the lady, and then take her to her own home. She told me it was not safe,and said she would call a cab, and began looking in her purse to see if she had enough money. She did not. I pulled out my purse and gave her the money I had in it, enough money for her to get home. She offered to pay it back, and I refused. I explained that I had just read the book Pay It Forward and I was paying it forward and she could do the same. Help some one else along the way. In a voice filled with amazement and wonder, she said I was the 3rd person to tell her about the book. She called me her “angel”, and left, after warning me to keep my doors locked and get out of the area as quickly as possible. I watched her get into the house safely, then left. But my heart sang with joy. I felt I was an instrument of God’s Love in that moment. I was grateful I noticed her, and spoke to her.
Michael, I want to say I just got my copies of your book about 8 days ago, right before I left on a trip to visit family in 3 states. Reading the 9 Insights is profoundly moving for me. I am quite busy, but I read in it each night. 11 Christmas’s ago, my beloved husband and soul mate died after a 2-3 year Journey through cancer. It was a profoundly beautiful and spiritual Journey for us together, inspite of the fact I was physically and emotionally exhausted at his death from no sleep as a caretaker. Christmas time has been hard for me since then. And I had 12 deaths of significant family and friends in the 6 years after his death. Your relationship with your friend Antinone (?spelling) has been precious to read. I also felt in the trauma of all the losses and events surrounding and following them, that I had lost a part of my spiritual connectedness. I just want to thank you for the beautiful writings…. I also wrote a book as a way of giving back out of my experiences and life wisdom and a way to try to put some of the pain behind me.

Dear Michael:
On Dec. 16, 2004, I lost my husband very suddenly and unexpectedly to a massive heart attack. I was driving us home from a few blissful days in Sedona and he passed away while we were on the freeway between Phoenix and Casa Grande – in the middle of nowhere, with little/poor cell phone connection.
The blessing was that his passing was incredibly peaceful – he just fell asleep and was gone from one second to the next.
The hard part was that this was so unexpected that we had no systems in place, no will, and lots of others no’s. Consequently this past year+ has been a time of incredible change for me – having to cope with grief simultaneously with having to find ways to survive in this new “single” future.
Your Wealthy Soul lessons and books entered my life at just the right time! I was approaching the anniversary of Duane’s death and feeling it more keenly than at any previous time — almost as if it was happening all over again!
Thank you for sharing such wonderful soul moments with the rest of us! Thank you for easing my journey and smoothing my path.

I just got in from seeing “Memoirs of a Geisha”. My favorite scene was the final one where the two souls torn from their first encounter and subjected to containing their true feelings at the sacrifice of what they had grown to believe was their destiny. The Chairman: his business partnership, and Sayuri, her journey from slavery to the most acclaimed Geisha. Her final words to the Chairman, “Every step I have taken was to bring me closer to you, ” summarizes every soul’s dream of finally being united with their beloved.
The elements to the movie were those of every human being: journey against all odds, betrayal, manipulation, jealousy, misuse and abuse of power, false friendship, questioning the direction of one’s heart vs. one’s fate, and the balancing of power between men and women.
I, for one, felt closure had been made. As the movie closed Sayuri stated as she embraced the Chairman that (as a Geisha) she would only be a half wife, but to be the half wife of the one that she held her heart under lock and key for…was all worth the journey to get there.
“Memoirs of a Geisha” was extraordinarily beautiful even amidst the squalor of the crowded houses. Whole sequences of illuminated pastels, smoky greys, evoked a rare beauty not found in many places. The time consuming preparation of a geisha to meet a well-to-do gentleman was awesome….it puts to shame the hurried makeup we put on our faces.
I loved the moment when she finally finds out that the Chairman has been providing for her all those years and has loved her all those years.
I loved this movie and will definitely buy it later on so my granddaughter can see it when she grows up.
Dear Michael, I have just receivedyour book, 9 Insights of a Wealthy Soul & can’t wait to read it. I haven’t heard of Memoirs of a Geisha, but get the guist of what it is trying to portray. I have 2 children with special needs, one profoundly intellectually handicapped & is now 15. over the years we have faced many very difficult situations, but the ones which I like to focus on the most are simple acs of kindness. Once when
it was pouring rain & I was on a bus to take my young son to a doctor, the lovely driver who could see my son as unwell and quite different went out of his way, and took me up to the front door of the Surgery, I have never forgotten his kindness 11 years down the road. Another time I was at a set of lights at a very busy untersection battling with my son,
many people walked past and stared at me, along came a lovely older man and picked up mson and crossed the road with me. He said to me, don’t mind those ignorant
people they know no other way. These 2 sepatate events happened many years ago, but really taught
me ti focus on the beauty in the simple acts of kindness we each receive and to always look for opportunities to do things for others in their time of need.
I cannot recall a geisha experience. I will watch the movie for further enlightenment.
